UNESCO intends to include the (Al-Tar Caves) in the Holy City of Karbala in their list

The Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has revealed its endeavour to include the area (Al-Tar Caves) in the holy city of Karbala to the list of global geological parks approved by UNESCO.

Dr Naeem Al-Aboudi, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said in a speech during a special workshop held at the University of Karbala, "The ministry seeks to strengthen capabilities, to protect the global geological heritage and establish UNESCO geological parks, to let (Al-Tar Caves) be included in the list as it represents a valuable landmark."

Alice Stott, Ecology and Earth Sciences Program specialist at the UNESCO Office to Arabs, said, "The Office in Cairo is ready to provide Iraq with all the technical support to include the site in the global classification."
